“Going to a country and not meeting the people who live there, is like watching a documentary behind a TV screen.”
One of the most delicious and authentic ways to get to know places to eat in Budapest is to “get into the kitchen”, that is, try the local gastronomy of each place. But I don’t just mean going to restaurants where there’s a sign with a big menu that says, “Typical local food.” If not, of those places that only locals know. Like the bar that frequents that group of friends leaving the office, or the typical food stall that people always go to “after partying.” Obviously for a tourist, a traveler, or a nomad, it’s not easy to find such places. Therefore, from a series of recommendations from 100% Hungarian venues we show you the top 6 of those places to eat in Budapest that you can not miss in the imperial city of Budapest:
Szimpla kert:
It is a neighborhood full “ruin bars”, or translated into Spanish “bars in ruins”, which are very popular in the city Budapest. These bars are characterized by being enabled, and were also located within the old factories of the Jewish quarter. At first glance it looks like a space of bad death, worn and little revitalized (unattractive to the visitor) but once inside, the atmosphere becomes incredibly authentic between its terraces and live music. Where you can find more than one budapestino tasting a refreshing beer (for only 2o) or its typical drink: fröccs. There is for all tastes: it is a bar, pub, restaurant and barbecue, yes, if you go on a Friday or a Saturday, you will not be the only person looking for typical and cheap drinks… so get ready to wait a while before entering!
Kürtöskalács:
A quick breakfast, and cheap. You can start your day in Budapest by strolling along the well-known avenues of: “Ferenciek”, at the train station in the east or by the Plaza de ‘rs Vezér, which is next to the metro of the city. There are two reasons and reasons why you have to find a small stall where you will find a typical sweet known for K.R.C. or fireplace cake. They are sweets dipped in sugar, chocolate, almonds, and/or coconut. But what exactly are they, the Kortsskalács? Imagine a thin cone-shaped dough, with a hole inside and also topped with cinnamon, cocoa or walnuts… Although also in the small cafes or restaurants you can find them, and accompany them with coffee and ice cream. My recommendation? Cocoa ice cream, and a hot chocolate. A perfect combination of this traditional dish.
Donut Library:
Yes, in Mexico we have the chocolate shells, but in Budapest there is the Donut Library. One of the best places to eat in Budapest. The place where they sell the best Buddha and Pest doughnuts perfect for eating at any time of the day. I would advise you to order a coffee with ice, since it comes decorated with a small doughnuts at the top, very cute! The place is not very easy to find, it is located outside the main streets, exactly in Pozsonyi út. It’s a small and comfortable place, so you may need to wait a while to get a table. Place near Margarita Island on the Danube River, do you want some good advice? Order a doughnuts and a takeaway coffee and enjoy it on beautiful Margarita Island. Although the Donuts Library is not of the most traditional or Hungarian, nothing happens, since doughnuts are something that everyone loves.
Gastland Bisztró Oktogon:
Do you have only one day in Budapest? Your best option is this restaurant BUFFET!, where you will find from the most famous “gulash” to the spicy dish known by Paprikás Csirke (did you know that the pepper was born in Hungary?). Don’t forget to accompany your meal with a delicious dessert and side dishes. 100% Hungarian atmosphere. You’ll feel like a local! And for the modest price of 6o or so, no one has problems with the foodall you can eat! . Perfect place for groups with different tastes, hungry and who do not like to wait very much. Don’t miss the Gastland Bisztró Oktogon, located on one of the main streets on the city side of ‘Pest’, Teréz Krt. It is the perfect place to recharge the necessary energies and tour the city. It has a great location, the food is very good and cheap, an amazing and authentic atmosphere what more can you ask for?!
Lángos de “Kazinczy utca”:
The Hungarian version of fast food, ignore any langos you see in your path, the good ones are those of Kazinczy Street, topped with lots of cheese, on a fried dough. The place is somewhat vintage, with a garden where you can sit and enjoy your lungos under a sky full of stars. In this place, there are several food stalls that are going to tempt you and a lot. Like, for example, the Berlin Canteen, Paneer, Le crépe, the Pasta station, Zing Burger among others. In short, it’s a Sunday sin. But of course, how are we not going to sin, if when we travel every day it’s Sunday.
Gelarto Rosa:
Well, maybe an ice cream parlour isn’t the most typical restaurant in Budapest, but it’s got something we can’t overlook… your ice creams are rose-shaped! And they also have a wide variety of flavors, from lavender or white chocolate to lemon and basil (you need to try it before judging!) and although surely there will be great tail at the entrance, it is worth waiting. I have never found ice cream with this form in another city, so to some extent, can they be a local specialty…?
We already know that for tastes, colors… But, if you’re going to visit Budapest, you can’t overlook these gastronomic tips. They range from great restaurants to small, luxury or budget, for dinner or a drink (or even ice cream). In this city, there’s something for everyone. Hungary is an amazing country that has an impressive variety of food, and after trying even one of these recommendations, you’ll have already lived and tasted a little of Hungarian culture. Enjoy it!
