Oktoberfest Curiosities

1. The first curiosity is that in 1949, the first Oktoberfest was held in Munich after the World War. In the tent called “Löwenbräu-Löwe“, which means lion brewery, people shouted so loud that the tent next door complained and even managed to get a shouting ban. But that didn’t last long!
2. One of the curiosities of the Oktoberfest is that in 1981, people drank so much that the beer in one tent almost ran out and they had to ask the tent next door for help.
3. The term “Wiesn“, which is written in a Bavarian accent and means “meadows“, was officially accepted in the Duden dictionary in 2017.
4. There are different Bavarian brands of beer such as Augustiner, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten-Franziskaner. The beers differ in taste and brewing style that’s why they have different colors. The light Augustiner is the most preferred and drunk beer at the Oktoberfest in Munich.
5. Another curiosity of the Oktoberfest is that more beer was never drunk than at the Oktoberfest in 1910. More than 12,000 hectoliters of beer were sold because it was the centennial celebrations of the Wiesn.
6. In 1985, more than 7.1 million people visited the Oktoberfest to celebrate the 175th anniversary.
7. An Oktoberfest tradition is for the mayor to break a large keg of beer to inaugurate the festival with the cry of “o’zapft is!”
